Miraculously, the genocide trial burst through to the finish line in Guatemala today. The “anulment” was called off and the court wasted no time at all in wrapping up before the next delay could happen. So today at 6 pm Rios Montt was sentenced to 80 years in prison. The Ixil survivors are weeping and calling “thank you thank you” in their language to the incredible Judge Jazmin Barrios..and the steps to the court house are filled with people going wild with joy. We need to stand by and be ready to work for everyone’s safety in the coming months. But for now I am going home to drink a toast to Everardo and the 200,000.
